Pastors band together and partner with AU Health System to promote COVID vaccinations in the community. A group of pastors from black churches and others Gathered on Monday to help the launch of a public campaign and aim to overcome historical apprehension within the community.
Mayor’s Office employee facing felony charges delayed by the pandemic remains on the job. The staffer, suspended in June, is charged with aggravated assault and first-degree child cruelty. No indictment has been brought, but the charges have not been dismissed.
Work crews began major maintenance work on Furys Ferry Road on Monday. Expect a single lane closure through Thursday during work hours for two weeks.

The U. S. Dept of Energy (DOE) has issued a Federal Register notice of its intent to draft an environmental assessment for the disposal of Savannah RiverSite contaminated process equipment. The equipment was contaminated at SRS during the on site treatment of tank waste. The proposal for disposal at a commercial low-level radioactive waste disposal facility outside SC will be assessed. The DOE also announced two public hearing webcasts on the Draft Versatile Test Reactor Environmental Impact Statement. The draft will assess production of fuel for the VTR at SRS and at the Idaho’s National Laboratory.

Crime decreased overall in Richmond County last year, but homicides and auto thefts were among the crimes that increased. Increased focus on patrolling is credited for much of the decrease. Homicides, on the other hand, increased for the fifth consecutive year in a row.
The country music trio Lady A, which includes two Columbia County natives, were surprised with an invitation to become members of the Grand Ole Opry during a taping for an upcoming Valentines Day Special. The invitation was delivered Thursday, 21 Jan, by South Carolina native and Masters stalwart Darius Rucker. The special, “Grand Ole Opry: 95 Years of Country Music” will be aired on NBC on 14 Feb.
